BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH
The Edo State Ministry of Health is one of the oldest in the State having been in existence since 1963 when Midwest Region was first created.
It is responsible for the formulation of Health policies, supervision and regulation of all health activities in the State. With its four Parastatals, it provides preventive and curative health services for Edo people; it is also one of the largest Ministries in the state.

- Pharmaceutical Services (DPS).

Functions of Ministry of Health.
- The formulation and execution of health policies.
- the execution of health sector development programs
- The administration of the State government hospitals and allied health institutions via the Hospitals Management Board (HMB).
- The monitoring and control of pharmaceuticals services especially the 106 registered pharmacies in Edo State as depicted in Table 6 below.
- The supervision and control of traditional medicine practice through the Traditional Medicine Board.
- The control of training institution for nurses, midwives, health superintendent, pharmacy assistant, other pharmaceutical staff and health workers.
