TUC Lauds Oshiomhole Over 10,000 Jobs' Creation
January 9, 2009 by Victor Ahiuma Young

TRADE Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), is excited with the jobs creation initiative of the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole led-government in Edo state, which planned to create not less than 10,000 jobs in the next four months, even as it called on the federal government to immediately organised a job-summit that will bring all stakeholders together to fashion out ways of tackling the unemployment scourge in the country.

TUC in a statement by its President-General and Secretary-General, Comrade Peter Esele and Chief John Kolawole, respectively, argued that the jobs creation initiative would go a long way to curbing the rising crime wave in the state.

According to statement: "If employment generation is pursued with vigour as it is been done in Edo State , where Governor Adams Oshiomhole is creating 10,000 new jobs in four months by other States, it will go along way to reduce the menace.

The Congress also reiterates that there is need for skills acquisition schemes to be developed backed with micro-credit schemes and school-to-land agricultural scheme to stem the tide of rural-urban drift.

The TUC calls on the Federal and State Governments to embark on a policy of extensive job creation even at the very low level will go a long way to take people off the streets.

The current efforts of the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS) and State Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (SEEDS) programmes should be reinvigorated with a view to addressing the problems of the informal sector and helping the small and medium scale enterprises grow.

We therefore call on the Federal Government to commence with utmost urgency the hosting of a job summit that will bring all stakeholders together to fashion out ways to tackle the unemployment scourge in the country as was done and implemented in Ghana.

The Congress stresses that even the problem in the Niger Delta seems unending because the youths are idle and have no jobs."

The umbrella body for senior staff associations in the country, also called "on the Federal Government to promote a comprehensive policy of generating employment, create an enabling environment for foreign investors to set up factories, industries through the provision of adequate, constant power supply, good roads networks, security to lives and properties and potable water."

Meanwhile, TUC in the statement said the group is worried and disturbed over " recent demolitions of markets, stalls, houses in Lagos State by the Special Task Force and calls for caution. Congress is not against the demolitions but concerned about governments non-challant attitude in finding alternatives for the displaced people.

The Congress reiterates that sending the displaced people into the unemployment market without any effort to rehabilitate them or make alternative space available would further compound the unemployment situation in the country and increase crime wave.

The Congress quite appreciates the efforts of the Lagos State Government in turning it into a mega-city which means that a lot of structures have to be brought down but regrets that the human angle to the problem has not been addressed.

The Congress therefore appeals to the Lagos State Government to tread with caution the displacement of people without providing succour in order not to increase the problems of urbanization."
