Edo State Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has appealed to residents to support his administration’s initiative at revenue generation.
He said the state requires N2billon to service its workforce.
Oshiomhole was speaking at a stakeholder’s forum on taxation with the theme: "Sustaining development through effective taxation."
The governor, who was represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Pally Iriase, said the government was not comfortable with the multiplicity of taxes.
He said the coming of all stakeholders to discuss the way forward for the implementation of tax policy was timely owing to the dwindling oil revenue.
He said the only way to address infrastructural decay was to improve on revenue generation.
"We want to ensure that multiplicity of taxes is a thing of the past. We want to harmonise the taxes so that nobody suffers multiplicity of taxes any longer. The levies were not necessarily being remitted to government. People were using the tax system to fleece their fellow human beings and in order to stop that, government had to come out with a policy. All legitimate levies and taxes will be collected to put a stop to the rot in the system," Oshiomhole said.
He urged members of the Board of Internal Revenue to ensure that all taxable individuals corporate bodies were not left out.
Oshiomhole pledged that government would make judicious use of the revenue.
Chairman of the Board of Internal Revenue Dr. Osayande Ugiagbe said the body would have Tax Payer Identification Number for all taxable adults to forestall tax evasion.
Ugiagbe said the outcome of the forum would help to chart a new path towards tax compliance
