Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday, arrested nine persons for selling petrol above the official pump price of N70 per litre. The state governor, who paid an unscheduled visit to some filling stations in Benin metropolis, also sealed nine petrol stations for the same offence.
The governor disclosed this at the swearing in of 17 newly appointed permanent secretaries in the state civil service.
According to him, “Based on the information I got as early as 7a.m, my team and I paid unscheduled visit to filling stations in order to address the prevailing scarcity of petroleum products which had few days to Christmas been causing unnecessary queue in the filling stations in the state.”
The governor, who lamented the unwholesome attitude of marketers unilaterally increasing the price of petroleum products because of the Christmas season, noted that it was disheartening to see that some Nigerians including major marketers, in spite of the falling prices of oil in international market could still indulge in making life difficult for the masses of the state.
He said during his visit he saw some filling stations selling fuel at about N75, N80, N85, N90, N95 and N100.
He also stated that he had directed the ministry of justice to look at the relevant section of the law in order to institute legal action against the offenders in the law court.
The governor directed that petrol should be sold at N70 per litre with the close supervision of the police and officials of the governor’s office, adding that if any of them resisted the action, he would revoke his certificate of occupancy, and the station would also be taken over by the state government.
He enjoined the people not to underestimate his administration, noting that his government is here to protect the people.
