Oshiomhole Protests Ribadu’s Dismissal

As reactions continue to trail the removal of the former Economic and Financial Crime Commission boss, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has pleaded with the Nigeria Police to re-visit the case of the former EFCC czar, adding that his dismissal is an embarrasement to the image of the force.
Comrade Oshiomhole, made this appeal yesterday in Government House in Benin City, Edo State capital, when the Chairman of the Police Service Commission retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Parry Osanyade, paid him a courtesy visit to congratulate him on his victory at the Appeal Court on Novermber 11, 2008.
Oshiomhole who described the dismissal of Ribadu as damaging to the police force and the image of the country said that when an employer makes a mistake in favour of the employee and the fact of that is established by law added that you do not seek to correct it at the expense of that employee, he said.
In his words, "If Nuhu Ribadu was over promoted ,if indeed that was a breach they should find the courage to hold who is responsible for the breach not the victim. Each time this happen they do damage to our collective pysche as an insititution.
The police authority should not be seen to target an officer with all the weapon in his armoury including trivialising whether or not he got his certificate of a course that was impose on him by the same police authority."
He argued that it is wrong for people to attribute Ribadu's travails to the fact that he fought corruption even when such perception is not true.
"Alot of Nigerian are saying it is because the man fought corruption because those little things they say in beer parlour shape the sentiments of the people and in democracy those issues of perception even if it is not real, if it is popularly share becomes a problem. I don't think that the way Ribadu was treated make the best statement of the Nigerian Police and in saying this, I am not putting defence the way Ribadu operate.
"One of the problem Ribadu had, which many people observe was that he was used to fight many certain persons and in the process, he shedded certain others and I think it appears to be true that he was quite arrogant."
He however, averred that for any institution to fight corruption it needs some degree of arrogance and self confidence after all the same people that held us down have done so with the same degree of arrogance, there is no question that when a situation where people have held us down are celebrating , you are going to find it difficult."
While urging Ribadu's successor, Mrs Farida Warizi to go after those he(Ribadu) did not not go after, added that Ribadu's exit shows that someone is still angry with the man.
Earlier on the DIG Parry Osanyede, had seek for the cooperation of the Edo State government towards the enhancement of the service condition of men of the force, while thanking the governor for the provision of bullet proof jackets to the command.
